Burns and Burn organisations use social media to share information, get feedback, create and sustain social connections and cohesion, and promote the ethos of the burn. This purpose of this survey is to reveal the range of social media in use, and especially highlight novel methods. Where Burns and Burns organisations have adopted policies for managing the use of social media these have been included as possible models. Please contact those Burns or Burn organisations for permission in that case.
The social media included here are - to the best of our knowledge - those that we have identified as having some governance or sponsorship relationship with the Burn or Burn organisation. In the case of websites, newsletters, mailing lists and facebook Pages we can do this with a high degree of certainty. In the case of facebook Groups we have looked for the presence of the Burn or Burn Organisation (or one of its Directors) as an Admin or Moderator for that Group, or for a link from the previously identified website or facebook Page.
This information has been assembled on a best endeavours basis. Given the large number of Burns and Burn Organisation, along with media options it is almost certain that we have accidentally missed some. Over time we will try to fill in these gaps, but in the same time frame some of this information will become out of date. Consequently no conclusions or inference except the most general should be drawn from the information presented on this page.
Aarhus Burns
Aarhus Burns website (http://www.aarhusburns.org/) appears to have gone offline some time after 2018. Aarhus Burners have set up two burns since 2020, Bivrost (or Bifrost) and Rainbow Burn.

Apogaea
Apogaea Social Media Guidelines & Policy
Approved by Apogaea Board of Directors vote 5/21/17
Apogaea, Inc. recognizes that many community members and volunteers participate in social media services for their own personal use and often, to discuss Apogaea, Burning Man and personal experiences within the culture. This accessibility and discourse contributes to the important long-term tradition and continuing evolution of the community.
Strong interpersonal bonds create an even stronger community. To help community members, our culture’s leaders, to engage within social networks and online communication without inadvertently causing any undue harm to Apogaea, Inc., the Burning Man Project or your fellow Burners, we’ve crafted a set of basic guidelines for social media and outlined a public social media policy. We intend these guidelines and policy to foster accurate communication and strengthen relationships through transparency of expectations.
General Social Media Policy
Apogaea, Inc. has a responsibility to maintain this space for the benefit of all visitors. The posts and comments made on our social media sites will have the power to add to or detract from Apogaea’s overall message. It is our responsibility to create online communication that enhances the experience of participants and visitors.
Post & Comment Guidelines
General
In general any posts that are obvious spam or commercial events will be deleted and the poster will be warned. (Theme camp fundraisers and Burner-ish free parties are not spam and will not be deleted.)
Our moderators will remove posts and comments they believe are counter to civil discourse.
Moderators may remove the following categories of comments and/or posts at their discretion:
Personal attacks or rumors (posts and/or comments) that are detrimental or disruptive to Apogaea and/or its volunteers, participants, or the community
Controversial statements related to the organization, its participants or the community
Off topic or unrelated to the organization’s or community’s activities
Spam (posts containing more than one URL or unrelated URL are considered spam)
Inaccurate information (this information may also be corrected in comments or additional posts from official sources such as Arthur Flame/Flaming Art)
Unnecessarily inflammatory language or posts attacking a point of view
Abusive language targeted to any groups (ethnic, racial, religious, class-related, ect.)
Content that knowingly violates the copyright, trademark or trade secret of any individual or entity
Repeat offenders or known trolls (Moderators may choose to permanently ban the IP addresses of these individuals from the forum.)
If questions arise about a moderator’s decision on social media guidelines or policy enforcement, contact the Communications Team by emailing Telemetry@Apogaea.com and IT@Apogaea.com. If you would like to further discussion the decision or have policy-related questions, contact the Board of Directors by emailing MissionControl@Apogaea.com.
“Turning Off” Comments
Moderators may choose, at times, to turn off the comments feature on a specific post due to a variety of factors including subject matter, web traffic patterns and timing. Feel free to trackback and post your thoughts if comments on that entry are “turned on” at a later time.
Although moderators have discretion to turn off comments at any time, they will try to avoid doing so mid-conversation and will avoid doing so if possible.
Moderators, Telemetry and IT may determine a standard operating procedure and timeframe for “turning off” comments on older posts to focus moderator efforts on contemporary conversations.
Appeal/Reposting
All edits, post removals and user actions are at the sole discretion of our moderators and are subject to appeal only if you can establish to their satisfaction that the decision should be reversed. Otherwise, post-removal decisions are final.
Board members are not forum moderators. Moderators are members of Ignition. Moderators will inform the Board of any policy-related issues arising out of social media communication and may consult with Board members regarding edits, post removals and user actions. Community members may discuss social media issues or appeals with the Apogaea Board of Directors. Board members will consult with moderators regarding such discussions.
If your post or comment has been edited, removed or comments “turned off”, you may repost the same information or opinion if you have remedied the issue leading to the moderator’s decision. Whether you have satisfactorily remedied the issue is up to the sole discretion of the moderator.
“Why can’t I express myself all over Apogaea’s social media?/What about Free Speech???”
Apogaea supports radical self-expression. As the Burning Man Project’s social media comment policy states, “We firmly believe you have the right to host what you want on your own website (so long, of course, as it doesn’t violate anyone else’s legal rights) – and we have that right too. Thus, if one of the things we don’t want on our site is your comment, we reserve the right to simply remove it. Our aim is to be as hands-off as possible and let you enjoy a spirited dialogue, but we retain the right and responsibility to maintain this space in the manner consistent with the atmosphere we hope to create for visitors.” Your posts and comments will not be censored just because we disagree with your opinion.
Updates to Social Media Guidelines & Policy
This is a living document that may be updated at any time. The Board of Directors will approve by vote these guidelines and policy and any subsequent updates to their terms. We welcome your help in upholding these policies.
General Post & Comment Guidelines (for posting to social media sites)
In general any posts that are obvious spam or commercial events will be deleted and the poster will be warned. (Things such as theme camp fundraisers and Burner-ish free parties will not be deleted.)
Our moderators will remove posts and comments they believe are counter to civil discourse.
Personal attacks and rumors (posts and/or comments) that are detrimental to Apogaea and/or its volunteers, participants, or the community will be deleted.
We reserve the right to stop and or delete comments on a thread that are controversial and/or go severely off topic.
See Apogaea.com for complete Social Media Guidelines and Policy.

Barcelona Burning Bash
Website (https://www.barcelonaburningbash.com/) last updated around 2020.
Posting Guidelines: Please Read
In response to recent conversations about commercial posts, the page admins have developed some guidelines for posting here:
If someone inquires about a particular service that you offer, responding with information is appropriate.
- If you have a business or service that you feel truly serves the local (Barcelona area) community, it’s okay to post about it a couple of times a year, but please include a message of how you see it relates to or benefits the local BURNER community. More frequently than that is inappropriate, as are businesses and services that don’t serve the physical Barcelona community.
- If you join the group and immediately advertise your commercial venture without being known or having engaged in other group exchanges, your post will be deleted. Repeated activity may result in being blocked from the group.
- Posts about ‘burner events’ are more than welcome, whether local to Barcelona or elsewhere in Europe. Events that don’t at least partially align with the Ten Principles probably aren’t burner events. Please think about whether some party in another country where a friend is DJing is really a burner event before posting it here.
- If you’re going to an interesting local event and want to invite friends in the community to come along, go ahead and post it here, even if it’s not a typical burner event or if there’s an entry fee. Once again, though - try not to abuse it.
Participation is one of our principles! We realize that there are some gray areas around these issues, so we would like to ask for your help. If you, as a member of this group, see a post that you feel doesn’t fit these guidelines, or is inappropriate for another reason, please consider commenting on it asking for clarification and / or use the ‘Report to Admin’ function (found in the little drop-down menu that appears on the top right when you mouse over a post) to alert us to the questionable post. This will help the admins better understand what issues the community cares about, and will keep us from having to closely monitor group activity.

Emergence
Facebook Group: Welcome to the Emergence Burn Group!
This is a page where we keep things positive. That means NO SNARK or TROLLING and remember the values of this group - to help virgins and returning Emergers prepare and to provide a safe place where questions can be asked without fear of being trolled or harassed.
A place for virgins and experienced Emergers to connect and grow - share ideas, ask questions without the fear of someone replying to you negatively, share resources and get organized for Emergence.
Feel free to post non-commercial links to awesome external articles, write ups, blogs, theme camp events. Please share! Let’s keep the good vibes flowing!
This is NOT a group to spam any ads for commercial services, sell or request Burning Man tickets (reselling Emergence tickets is acceptable), products or trying to profit off of by selling your trinkets. Discussing anything illegal. Events need to be Burn related and above all this is not a place for snark. If an admin sees it, we will remove it and you from the group.
Lastly, If you see something inappropriate posted in this group, please let one of the admins know. We will remove it to keep everything positive.
Thank you!

Firefly
Group Moderation:
Copied from Playa del Fuego:
This is a semi-official group for all things Firefly. It's actively managed by some jerks who run a Firefly core or two, and maybe we even have a board member hanging out. Who knows? It all depends on who is wearing what hat today.
We (the jerks) really only ask members to follow 3 rules within the group:
1. Keep it relevant to Firefly or Regionals
2. No advertisements (even relevant ones) or SPAM - the only "ads" we want to see is a theme camp advertising their event (theme camp fundraisers are ok)
3. Don't violate Facebook's Terms of Service, which means no name calling, threats, or bullying.

FreezerBurn Texas is a Central Texas winter regional arts event and community experiment. 2020 was our twelfth year, and our 2021 event was canceled.

The following types of posts are not appropriate for this community:
- Actual spam obvs
- Self-promotion
- Promotion of commercial ventures (OKAY: "Anyone going to this? It's not my event and I'd like company." NOT OKAY: "Link to event or DJ set without comment")

Fuego De Mayo
Facebook Group: Florida en Fuego holds Burning Man inspired events in North Florida in the spirit of the 10 Principles of Burning Man to celebrate art, music, and community with a family friendly all-inclusive collective ethos. We are dedicated to maintaining a safe and fun environment where everyone is accepted. A shared philosophy permeates every aspect of our culture. This ethos is the living heart of our community, our conscience, and our collective memory.
Be kind and courteous. We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but kindness is required. No hate speech or bullying!
Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things such as race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated. Snark is not at the expenses of people who you don't know and don't have that kind of relationship with! People who you don't know may not find it funny even if you do. We love a healthy debate, but let's come from a place of love and respect that we have for our community. Please treat others as if they were IRL in front of you. Radical inclusion!
No Company promotions. There are other groups to add your company info to. Please don't add links in threads related or not related to what your company makes or sells. This includes self promotion of festivals, DJ mixes, and other non Burning man related events. It's ok to share music, art, clothing, camping gear, and other products, that you are not personally capitalizing on to the group. If you want to share something you think is cool and others may like it that is great! There is another group specifically for burner own businesses to advertise and support others. There are even more group to promote festivals and music. Remember Decommodification is one of our favorite ethos.

Nowhere
Facebook Group: This is a space for anyone interested in the burner and Nowhere communities in Europe.
Welcome to the Nowhere/Euroburners Facebook group. This group aims at bringing together the European Burning Man and Nowhere communities for general conversation about Nowhere, Burning Man, and other related events. Here are a few simple rules we ask that you follow in this online space.
- Follow the spirit of the 10 principles
Our community is grounded in the ten principles of self-expression, self-reliance, no commerce, leave no trace, participation, inclusion, gifting, co-operation, community, and immediacy. Where possible, try following them in this space too!
- Show us your best behaviour
Be nice and courteous in your conversations. Show a little patience, we are a diverse mix and it is what makes us great. We want everyone to feel welcome and included.
- Stay on topic
This group is about Nowhere, Burning Man, and those events' communities. We do not mean to police conversation strictly, keeping in line with our principle of self-expression. However, if you wish to discuss topics that are far removed from the objectives of this group, we ask that you please take this conversation somewhere else.
- No Commerce, here as well
Following our principle of no commerce and the previous point, we ask that you do not advertise for your company or product or commercial project in this group. This includes your self-promotion, for instance as a performer or DJ. Announcements relative to the funding of art projects for burn events are welcome.
- Search before asking
Got a question? Why not take a few minutes to browse our awesome online documentation at https://goingnowhere.org to see if the answer isn't already there? You'll be respectful of others by sparing everybody's time. Still couldn’t find what you were looking for? Don't hesitate to ask!
- It's not a playa…
...it's a field of dirt.

3.1 Why is the Facebook group Burning Man Netherlands/Dutch Burners private?
We have an official facebook page, Burning Man Netherlands, and an eventpage for every official BM NL event. In the beginning, we only had a private facebook group – it was only a small core group and the group Burning man Netherlands/Dutch Burners was only intended for a ‘chat’ and was put up by the community. Slowly the group became a virtual meeting place for like-minded people from the Netherlands and eventually across the world. We could not foresee, what happened in 2016 in terms of attention and flood for this group. So we decided to use our official Facebookpage as the place to look for official information and updates from Burning Man Netherlands and our events. The private community/group for Dutch Burners is still being mainly run by active community members and is being used for BM NL event members and for those invited by friends.
3.2 Can I get access to the Facebook group?
Requests to join the private Facebook group are manually added by the admins of that group. But you can always like and/or follow our official facebookpage.
3.3 Can I subscribe to the newsletter?
Absolutely! Stay informed on all activities, events and burner need-to-knows from Burning Man Netherlands, by subscribing using this form.
Also, you can subscribe to the official Burning Man USA newsletter ‘Jack the Rabbit speaks’.
